Yesterday was an unbelievable powder day here at Heavenly and we have more of the same in store for you today. With almost a foot of fresh snow on the hill in the last 48 hours and great weather, it’s looking like a beautiful morning to get out early and make some fresh tracks. Light [...]
The last week has been an awesome one of riding on an always-fluffed Squaw Valley. It hasn’t been the big, nightly numbers that we got used to in January. Rather it’s been Sneaky Little Storms creating a wind-buffed paradise – plus one good mini-dump that jived with what felt like a second opening-day in Silverado. And in this mutant-athlete paradise, there were people chucking themselves from 50-footers in Silvy with only 8-10 new inches on Friday morning.
Preparing to huck from Kima's Paw in Silverado
While the North Shore of Tahoe and also Truckee have gotten missed by most of the action the Pacific Crest has been shrouded for over a week. The result has been moderate accumulations just about every night and there’s been enough wind to move it all around into those sweet nooks that we love to stumble upon. Did you know that wind can move snow at a factor of 10:1? If you’re a better skier than mathematician this means that just a couple inches of snow over here can blow into drifts over there as deep as two feet.
The Palisades…fluffed
It’s been an awesome week of riding thanks to getting just enough snow and wind plus just enough cloud cover to keep the white in its best state: nice and chilly. On Friday, Silvy opened at 1:30 and the Palisades’ rope dropped at 2:30 – seems like everything this week has been a bit of a surprise! Highlights have been all routes under Cornice II, the windbuff on Headwall Face, Silverado (again), and on Saturday the ‘misty’ call was Olympic Lady pow laps.…
Oh, and for the title of this post why not have a reference to The Who on the day they play the biggest halftime show in all of sports? One of their best songs is The Seeker…

I am one of a lucky few who live on the route of the Sherwood Shuttle. I took advantage of the shuttle today and walked out of my house in ski boots and hopped on the 9 am shuttle as it went past my house. The shuttle runs on Saturdays and Sundays and leaves from the parking lot across the street from Sunnyside Resort. Anyone can ride it and they even sell tickets on the bus. It drops you off right at the Sherwood lift and is a hassle free way to start and finish your day on the slopes. It runs up the hill at 9 and 10 am, and runs down the hill at 2, 3,and 4 pm. While I may live on the route, there’s nothing to stop you from enjoying this free service, especially if you are staying on the west shore.
On a side note, the snow at Alpine is fantastic. The storms just keep on coming…. Here are a few clips from today, Sunday 2/6/2010. I found some great snow in the lesser traveled nooks and crannies and enjoyed a shuttle ride right to my house. It doesn’t get any better.
